The Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu is the most scenic route treating you to spectacular views of crystal clear lakes, amazing snow peaks and lush green vegetation. This scenic Salkantay Trek Peru has been used for many years by ancient people and now local Quechua people from the area still hike this Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu and into the Amazon rain forest. Salkantay or Sallqantay is the highest peak of the Vilcabamba Mt. range in the Peruvian Andes and is the twelfth highest peak in Peru overall. This “savage mountain” (the name as translated from the Quechua language) is located in the Cusco region about 60 km northwest of the city of Cusco.
The Salkantay Trek 5 Days will leave you feeling inspired and more connected with the peaceful nature of the Peruvian Andes. This peak has been considered to have special significance for the native people of the Cusco region and those who believe in the ancient Andean religion. This is what makes this adventure a uniquely spiritual experience.
Salkantay Trail – Highlights
We will pick you up from your hotel at approximately 5:30am and then we will travel by private bus to Mollepata where there will be a quick stop for breakfast. Then we continue driving for another two hours until we arrive at Soraypampa. From there we will begin our Salkantay Trek adventure to the scenic Lake Humantay, a lake fed from mountain glaciers that has views of Mount Salkantay a sacred mountain in Incan mythology.After visiting the umantay lake we go back to lunch spot and we will enjoy our first lunch on our hike.After delicious food we hiking up to our comping site for 3 hrs,

After waking up early for a warming coca tea there will be time to enjoy a lovely breakfast before embarking on our second day of the Salkantay Trek. This day will be the longest day of trekking, first climbing upwards as we ascend to reach the trek’s highest point (4,638m / 15,213 ft). Surrounded in every direction by snow capped mountain peaks of the Vilcabamba range, we will take in the views of the glacial south face of Mount Salkantay towering above us. After passing the highest peak we will change direction and head downwards through lush green vegetation, descending into the jungle of the Cloud forest.

Another early start with a morning coca tea that is shortly followed by breakfast. We will begin hiking by descending along the Salkantay river where you can see striking orchids accompanied by colourful butterflies and start to feel the warm air rising from the jungle below. As we continue trekking we will hike through more populated rural areas as well as passing through banana, passion fruit and avocado orchards. We will enjoy a scenic picnic alongside the river followed by visit a tour of a coffee plantation. After reaching the end of our Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu we will enjoy a lunch together before taking a private bus to hot springs at Cocalmayo following which we travel to Playa Sahuayaco.

On day 4 our wake up will be at 6:00 am with another coca tea and breakfast. After we start our hike up to Llaqtapata for aproximatly 3 hours, from there we view part of the Machu Picchu Inca site from a distance. We also take time to explore the fascinating Inca site of Llaqtapata. We then have a 3 hours descent to Hydroelectrico where we have our last yummy lunch of the Salkantay Trek. We keep hiking for 2 hrs more to reach Aguas Calientes Town.

Today we reap the rewards of completing the Salkantay Trail Peru and take a short bus ride up from the town to visit the Machu Picchu Inca site. We will enjoy a two hour tour with a local guide after which you will have to time to explore the beauty of this vast archaeological site yourself. Following this we will get a train back to Ollantaytambo from Aguas Calientes Town and then return to Cusco by private bus.
