Ausangate Trek to Short Inca Trail 5 Days

This Ausangate trek and Short Inca Trail 5 day tour is a combination of culture, adventure, and history where you will see the most beautiful views. The first three days of this trail will take you through incredible landscapes, crystalline lagoons and you will be able to admire the beauty of the Andes in a variety of different ways. You will also be able to appreciate beautiful mountain valleys surrounded by llamas and alpacas and see the indigenous people living in the shadows of beautiful snow-capped peaks. You will also get to see the breathtaking scenery of Rainbow mountain and Red valley, which are considered to be one of the true marvels of the Cusco region.

Day 4 we continue on with our adventure to hike the Short Inca Trail, where we will follow in the footsteps of the Incas until we reach the famous Sun gate entrance, where you can enjoy you first glimpses of the wonder of the world, Machu Picchu. After staying the night in Aguas Calientes, you will return to Machu Picchu on Day 5 where you’ll enjoy a private guided tour of this incredible archaeological site, before heading back to Cusco that evening via train and bus.

Ausangate Trail To Short Inca Trail 5 Days – Wild Wilderness:

 Short Inca Trail – A Journey Through History:

  • After experiencing the wilderness of the Ausangate region, the trek transitions into the Short Inca Trail, which follows in the footsteps of the ancient Inca civilization.

  • The trail is a shortcut to Machu Picchu, combining lush cloud forests with Inca ruins such as Wiñay Wayna and Inti Punku (the Sun Gate), where trekkers get their first breathtaking view of Machu Picchu.

  • You’ll be walking through history, passing remnants of Inca engineering and architecture while making your way toward the ultimate destination—Machu Picchu, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Itinerary

DAY 1:Cusco – Tinki - Upis

You will be picked up from your hotel at 5:30 AM by your Trekking Guide, then you will drive for approximately 3 hours to reach the starting point located in the Village of Upis (4400 m/ 14,436 feet). At this place, you will meet your muleteers, and after a brief introduction, you will begin your adventure.The first section of the trail to the lunch spot is a gentle ascent, the path passes through an Andean valley where it is possible to see many alpacas and llamas and the glacier of the Ausangate mountain range.After 2 hours of hiking, you will arrive at the lunch spot, where you will enjoy a delicious lunch prepared by your cook. After the delicious lunch, you will continue walking to the first pass called Arapa at 4800 m/ 15,748 feet for 2 hours, from where you will enjoy stunning views of the great mountains and valleys of the high Andes. The next section of the trail to the campsite is downhill for 2 hours. Today, you will camp at 4650 m/ 15,256 feet. Lunch and dinner included.

DAY 2:Upis – Ausangate Cocha - Auqui

Our wake-up will be early, and then we will pack our gear and have a delicious breakfast prepared by our cook. After that, we’ll be ready for today’s hike. Then, you’ll pack your backpacks and start the adventure. The trail begins with a gradual ascent and then becomes very steep as you approach the next step. After 3 hours of hiking, you will reach the next pass at 5,000 m/ 16,404 feet.This section from the last camp to this pass is one of the most scenic on the trail; from the pass, you will enjoy mesmerizing views of the Ausangate Glacier, reddish valleys, and the imposing Vilcanota Mountain Range. After taking in the incredible views, you will descend to reach a valley where you will have lunch.In the afternoon, after lunch, you will walk for another 2 hours to reach the next pass called Warmisaya, located at 5000m / 16,404 feet. This is another incredible place and you will be able to see the Rainbow Mountain in the distance. You will still walk downhill for 30 minutes from the pass and reach the next campsite (Qomercocha) located at 4800 m/ 15,748 feet.

DAY 3:Auqui - Rainbow Mountain - Red Valley - Ollantaytambo

After enjoying our final breakfast prepared by our expert chef, you will set off towards Rainbow Mountain. The section from the camp is a 30-minute ascent followed by a 30-minute descent, then a 1-hour moderate ascent. After a while, you will reach the summit of Rainbow Mountain long before the crowds and will have plenty of time to enjoy this fascinating place.Then, you will walk to the Red Valley, which is another spectacular place that will literally make you feel like you’re in a different world. Here you will see valleys, hills, and small mountains in a pale reddish tone, and the coolest part is that you will walk through it. After experiencing this beautiful valley, you will continue walking downhill to the end of the trail where our private transport will be waiting to take you to the Ollantaytambo train station. Upon arriving in the town of Ollantaytambo, you will have a late lunch at a local restaurant and stay at a hotel where you can enjoy a good shower and well-deserved rest for the next day.

DAY 4:Ollantaytambo - Km 104 - One day Inca Trail - Sun Gate Machu Picchu

After breakfast, we will pick you up from your hotel around 5:30 AM and board one of the first trains to the Inca Trail at Km 104 (Chachabamba). The train journey, which takes about 1.2 hours, moves through the valleys of the Urubamba River and the cloud forest. Upon reaching Km 104 (Chachabamba), we will disembark, cross a suspension bridge, and arrive at the first checkpoint, where you will need to show your original passports. Then, we will prepare for the hike.

The Short Inca Trail begins with a guided tour of the Inca site of Chachabamba, followed by a gradual 3 to 4-hour ascent to Wiñay Wayna, the most famous Inca site along the Classic Inca Trail. Our tour guide will take you through the most important buildings, including temples, waterfalls, warehouses, and agricultural terraces, and we will enjoy a packed lunch organized at the nearby campsite.

The second part involves an easier 1-hour hike to Intipunku (Sun Gate), where we will be greeted with the first and most spectacular view of Machu Picchu, Huayna Picchu, the Urubamba River, and the Andes Mountains. We will spend some time enjoying the sunset over Machu Picchu. Then, we will continue to the top of Machu Picchu for another hour to capture magnificent photographs with fewer visitors in the afternoon.

Finally, there is a 30-minute bus ride to the town of Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo). Dinner is served at a local restaurant, and we will spend the night in a 3-star hotel.

DAY 5:Machu Picchu Guided Tour – Tren - Ollantaytambo - Cusco

Today, a nutritious breakfast will prepare us at the hotel for our Machu Picchu tour. After breakfast and picking you up at the hotel, we will walk to the bus station to take the bus back to Machu Picchu. Once in Machu Picchu, we will visit the middle and lower parts of this citadel because the Inca Trail ticket allows us to visit this part of Machu Picchu (Circuit 3), where our guide will provide valuable information about this unique site and you will have plenty of time to enjoy the views and take incredible photos. The tour will last approximately 2 hours, 2 hours enjoying the history and seeing unique places such as temples, barns, houses, terraces, plazas, aqueducts, and the fascinating views that surround this impressive Inca citadel.If you have booked an additional ticket for Huayna Picchu Mountain, you will climb the mountain after the tour; however, spaces are subject to availability. In the unlikely event that there are no permits available for Huayna Picchu on the date of your tour, you will instead hike up Machu Picchu Mountain. This hike to the mountain would be without a guide.After having a great time at the Inca emperor’s palace, we will take the bus to the town of Machu Picchu (Aguas Calientes) where we will have lunch (not included). In the afternoon, we will take the train back to the Ollantaytambo train station, where our driver will be waiting to take you back to your hotel in the city of Cusco. (this transfer service from the train station to your hotel is included).
