Journey through an undiscovered landscape that sways between desert terrain and snow-capped peak to reach Ausangate & Rainbow Mountain with Red Valley. You’ll Hike through small villages and spot herds of alpacas before arriving in the painted hills that exist deep inside the most remote portions of the Andes. The mountain you seek is tucked away in the middle of the glacial mountains of the Vilcanota Range in the south of Peru. Measuring in at just below 21,000 feet in elevation, the mountain is the highest in the Cusco region. You will be able to access its beauty with a simple 3-hour drive from the main hub of Cusco. Don’t think of this journey as a mere vacation. What you’re about to embark on is a wilderness trek that will take you above the tree line to see spectacular views of the Andes and glacial peaks.

Ausangate to Colorful Mountain 3 Days – Highlight

We pick you up from your hotel at 3.40am from where we take a private bus to Tinke. We arrive at approximately 7: 30 am and will have a filling breakfast in Tinke to prepare for the challenging hike ahead. We will also meet our horsemen and begin the trek to Rainbow mountain Cusco (approx. 4000 m , 13,100 ft). We begin by hiking for 3 hours, starting with a gradual ascent through farm land before following an undulating path that descends into the valley through herds of alpaca.
We then reach our lunch spot Upis (approx. 4400m , 14.225 ft) alongside a stream in the shadow of the incredible snowcapped Ausangate Mountain. After lunch we continue upwards again and cross the Ausangate Mountain Pass at 4800 m before following paths past llamas, picturesque lagoons and glorious glacial mountain peaks. We reach our campsite at approximately 4.30pm where we enjoy a dinner together before getting some rest to prepare for the following day’s trek ahead.

We have another early start, woken by a warm cup of coca tea, taking in the spectacular views of the Ausangate Mountain and Glacier bathed in the early morning sunlight. After some time for photos we start our day’s hike with an hour and a half ascent up to (4900 m 15,415 ft) where we cross another mountain pass and bid farewell to Ausangate Mountain. Following this we encounter an approximately 2 hour undulating descent to our next campsite situated in the valley next to 3 Days Rainbow Mountain Valley. Here we will make a stop for a tasty lunch before continuing the spectacular ascent up Rainbow Mountain in the afternoon.
We begin our afternoon’s trekking with a steep ascent for 1hr 30 mins before descending into the next valley for another 30 mins. From here we will be able to see Rainbow Mountain Cusco in the distance, getting ever closer as we hike past glorious lagoons and then begin the final approximately 1 hr ascent up to the peak of Rainbow Mauntain Cusco (5200 m/ 20,314 ft). We will spend between 30 mins to 1 hr (weather dependent) to take photos to commemorate this incredible hike also allowing time take in the spectacular views of this special mountain and the glorious surrounding landscape. We will then descend to the campsite along the same route we came arriving back at approximately 5pm for another delicious dinner and a well earned rest after this intensive day of hiking.

On the last day of the 3 Days Rainbow Mountain cusco we have a more leisurely start having completed the hardest part of the hike. We are again awoken with a lovely warm cup of coca tea and a tasty breakfast before we set out on our hike. We follow the stream down into the valley for approximately two hours, taking in the beautiful sights of the surrounding snow capped mountain peaks, crystal clear waters and herds of llamas and alpacas. As we descend in altitude the terrain changes from glacial mountain peaks to rolling luscious green turf until we reach our final destination at the base of the traditional 1 Day Rainbow Mountain cusco. From here we will travel by private bus for approximately 3 hours until we return to Cusco where you will be dropped off at your hotel.
