Guided Machu Picchu by Train tour – Highlights
You will be picked up from your hotel in Cusco at approximately 5am by your tour guide, before driving one and hour and a half by private van to Ollantaytambo train station. There we board the train and take it all the way to Aguas Calientes (a small town close to the Sanctuary of Machu Picchu). The train ride takes about 2 hours and offers beautiful scenery of mountains and forests along the way, no doubt this is one of the most spectacular train rides we have to offer in Peru. Upon your arrival in Aguas calientes town, your tour guide will take you to the bus station to take the shuttle bus up to Machu Picchu.
This bus takes about 20 minutes along a steep and winding road through offering amazing views. Finally we arrive to Machu Picchu where our local guide will tour the most important sectors of this impressive Inca citadel. In Machu Picchu, you will spend 2 hours on a private tour with our guide, taking time to visit the agricultural areas consisting of sets of farming terraces, the urban area where the occupants lived as well as some of the important religious and civilian ceremonial places. This includes Intiwatana located in the highest part of the citadel, the temple of the sun, the condor and other important sectors of the site.
After completing the tour, we will take the bus back down to Aguas Calientes where you can opt to have lunch. In the afternoon, you will return with your guide by train to the town of Ollantayambo and then continue the onward journey by private van until Cusco. The return bus journey to Cusco usually takes about an hour and a half, depending on the traffic, and on arrival we will drop you back at your hotel in Cusco.
